Our Alumni Society „Freunde der Mathematik an der Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz e.V.“ (Friends of Mathematics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz) was founded on December 8, 1998 by 8 founding members. We have set ourselves the goal of helping to shape the study programs at our university to make them more attractive and we try to win more students for the Institute of Mathematics. Furthermore, we would like to create a forum for alumni to stay in touch with the Institute and with former fellow students. The society is also a contact point for students who are planning a semester abroad, and also for guests of the Institute.
We organize information days for interested pupils to inform them about the study programs and study contents of mathematics at JGU. We also support the school paper “Monoid”, published by the Institute of Mathematics, and the annual workshop “Mainzer Mathe Akademie”. In addition, we invite alumni who have been working for companies for some time, to talk at a colloquium. They report about their tasks and working environments and give a first-hand insight into their professional world. We also invite teachers to refresh and deepen their knowledge of mathematics in courses and colloquia.
An annual summer festival will give alumni an opportunity to reconnect with former fellow students, professors and employees of the institute. We believe that all those aspects are in the interest of the Institute and we hope to demonstrate the attractiveness of studying mathematics.
We are happy to answer your questions (contact details can be found in the right column). We also invite business companies, who would like to present themselves in our Institute and/or would like to give ours students an insight look into their working environment, to contact us.
